DEFINITION

 

To Maintain District grounds, including lawns, sprinkler systems, shrubs, plants and trees; and to operate a variety of power and hand tools in the performance of assigned tasks.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general supervision from Maintenance and Transportation Director and/or Maintenance Foreman.

 

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Water, cultivate, weed, mow and edge lawns; rake leaves and removes trash; sweep sidewalks.

 

Install, repair and maintain sprinkler systems including athletic field systems.

 

Trim shrubs, trees and flowers; remove diseased, damaged and unwanted trees and shrubs.

 

Clean asphalt areas and play fields; prepare and clean area for sports events.

 

Mix and spray pesticides on fence lines and areas as necessary; fertilize flowers, plant trees and lawns.

 

Install, perform scheduled maintenance; remove graffiti as necessary.

 

Install landscaping and plants varying types and sizes.

 

Operate truck, tractors, aerators, power sweeper, mower, and hand tools as needed.

 

Assist in other areas of the Maintenance and Transportation Department as assigned; may assist in delivering supplies.

 

Remove snow and ice as necessary or as directed.

 

Move and maintain spectator bleachers from sports events.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

 

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in gardening work.
  • Shrubs, plants and lawn care.
  • Hand and power tools used in groundskeeping.
  • Safe work practices.

  • Fertilizers, pesticides, and safe and approved application methods.

 

Ability to:

 

  • Perform general gardening work.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Perform heavy physical work as required at different times, such as pushing, pulling or lifting of items weighing from 50 to 100 pounds. Will involve lifting items of 25 lbs. from waist to overhead, 50 lbs. from the floor to waist high.
  • The ability to perform a wide variety of manual labor tasks such as: using a shovel to excavate soil around sprinklers or for broken pipes, picks, chainsaws, trimmers, weed eaters, etc.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to climb ladders to take down cage nets, track nets and more.
  • Ability to walk 5-10 miles a day sometimes to paint football field and soccer field.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

 

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Experience:

One year of experience of gardening, nursery or grounds maintenance.

 

Training:

 

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

 

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
